Kitty remembered what Daisy had told her – that Max had been sure Kitty wouldn’t like how different the countryside was from the town. Quickly, she replied, ‘No, but I think it’s much nicer to be able to leave it open.’
Max looked surprised.
‘Maybe we’ll see that little black cat later,’ Kitty said with a smile. ‘I love how many animals there are here. You’re so lucky to live here, Max.’
For the rest of the day, Max was a bit friendlier to Kitty. When they sat down to eat dinner that evening, he even asked her if she wanted to go out and see Holly and Seamus with him later on.
‘I’d love to!’ said Kitty. But as she spoke, there was a loud grumble of thunder from outside.
‘You might have to wait until tomorrow to take Kitty to see the horses, I’m afraid,’ said Aunt Wendy, standing up from the table. ‘It sounds like we’ve got a big storm coming. I’d better go and make sure all the animals are inside.’
‘And I’ll go bring Daisy in,’ said Uncle Greg, as the little dog began barking from the farmyard. ‘Animals can get very anxious during storms, especially young animals like Daisy,’ he explained to Kitty.
‘It’s lucky we picked all those strawberries today!’ Aunt Wendy said, pulling on her raincoat. ‘The strawberry patch will be a muddy mess tomorrow.’
‘Yes, I just hope the mice don’t nibble the berries overnight.’ Uncle Greg said. ‘I stored the baskets in the barn and covered them with a few sheets, but the little pests seem to be able to get into anything. If they manage to get into the baskets, all the strawberries will be ruined. We won’t be able to sell any!’
Aunt Wendy sighed. ‘They’re getting worse every week. It’s so annoying, Kitty. There are plenty of wild berries and seeds for them to nibble in the fields outside the farm, but they seem to prefer ours.’ She glanced at Star, who’d come into the kitchen to shelter from the rain. ‘Poor Star. He just can’t keep up with them any more.’
Kitty saw the old cat’s ears droop sadly as he heard what his humans were saying. Her heart sank. Kitty knew that her aunt and uncle made money from selling goods from the farm, like strawberries, milk and eggs. If the mice were spoiling their produce they wouldn’t be able to sell it, and that would mean big problems for Strawberry Lane Farm.
